Queer Meetup Munich May 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to the May 2023 edition of our monthly newsletter. As seasons change and our connections grow stronger, we are excited to bring you the latest updates, news and cool upcoming events, but also to keep in touch and say a nice big Hola to everyone!

1. A few questions with “our co-organizer- Andrea G.”

We are introducing a new feature called “A few questions with…” series, where we introduce a member/ co-organizer. If you would like to be featured in the series, write to us at queermuenchen@protonmail.com  or send me a message (profile name He-run-may on Meetup). This segment is thanks to a nice member who gave us feedback on the first newsletter and suggested we include this segment. Here, you can get to know a bit more about the wonderful Andrea G. If you see her at the next meetup, don’t forget to go say hi!

  • When did you join this group? How was your experience so far?

I joined in 2019 when I moved to Munich. Before the Covid lockdowns, I could only join like one meetup :). But, in the past year it has become a huge part of my life and I have met amazing people that I now love.

  • Why did you decide to become a co-organizer, and what sort of events would you like to organize?

I wanted to become an organizer to target more geek events, like Nintendo game events, quiz nights and some more sport related activities. I am very excited about a paper plane race event when the weather allows.

  • Tell us a bit about yourself…

I was born in Bogotá, Colombia, where I lived until I was 25. I have been living in Munich for almost 4 years now, and the thing I love the most about it, is the beer! I love console games and Harry Potter, like every second lesbian :D. I also love poems and dogs and would love to see more of them in the events.

  • Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Dog person.

  • Favorite vacation destination…

Mmmm Disney

  • Favourite series…

One day at a time

  • Favourite book…

The song of Achilles

  • Favourite movie…

El lado oscuro del corazon

2. We are on Social Media

Did you know that we are on social media? Here is a link to our Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/queermuenchen/ . And here’s a link to our brand new Facebook page http://facebook.com/queermuenchen . The lovely Arijit and Andrea di S. manage our social media accounts. If you would like to be part of our social media team, please email us queermuenchen@protonmail.com or write to Arijit or Andrea di S. on meetup. Rest assured, we only post pictures on our social media pages after receiving explicit approval from all individuals featured in the photos. Finally, we also have an active Whatsapp group. If you would like to be part of this group, just show up at one of our events and talk to one of the co-organizers. They will be happy to add you to the group. In addition to these social media sites, I also suggested that we open accounts on Myspace and AOL messenger. These suggestions were sadly rejected.

3. News from the organization team

We would like to say a very queer welcome to our newest co-organizer Dee! She joined the organizing team just this month and has already hosted a few events. We also want to thank Sushil for helping us organize events in his short stint as a co-organizer. He stepped down last month, but we are happy that he is still an active member of our meetup group.

Additionally, we are actively seeking more co-organizers to ensure we can sustain the frequency of our events. If you have attended at least three events and are interested in joining our team, please email us at queermuenchen@protonmail.com or reach out to any of the current co-organizers. We would love to have you on-board!

4. Member initiated and hosted events

Some people do not have the time to become a co-organizer right away, but would like to host/organize an event or two. If you want to organize an event or two (Hiking? Dinner?, clubbing? A party?…) email us/ reach out to us and we will help you host your event. Recent examples of such events include “a visit to the zoo” or “a discussion on pink washing”.

5. Highlights of some recent events

We celebrated our 5th birthday with a lot of cake and drinks at Lez on the 12th of May. It was wonderful that so many of us joined in the celebrations!

We had many diverse events this month already, ranging from a beginner Salsa workshop (we hope to organize another one soon: currently trying to bribe the instructors), a harp class concert, a board game night, an arts and crafts meetup, a visit to the zoo and ofcourse our regular Lez and Sub Stammtische.

6. Upcoming events

We have plenty of exciting upcoming events. You can find them all here https://www.meetup.com/queer-muenchen/events/ .

We have a couple of big events coming up in June. Our grill party by the lake on the 4th of June https://www.meetup.com/queer-muenchen/events/292830554/  and ofcourse we will be marching in the Munich CSD. You can find all the details here https://www.meetup.com/queer-muenchen/events/292381337/.

Alright, that’s it for this month’s newsletter. If you would like to contribute to the newsletter (maybe you wrote a poem about your latest hookup or want to recommend a book or a film, etc), just reach out to us. Also, if you are looking for players for your volleyball team or are looking for a singer in your choir, etc, just reach out to us and I will put it in the newsletter!

Thank you for being a part of our vibrant community! We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and hearing your contributions for the next newsletter. Stay connected, stay queer!”
